What Generation am I? Defining and Understanding Different Generations

Posted on February 15, 2021

hands of three generations

“A generation is all of the people born and living at about the same time, regarded collectively (wikipedia.com)." Whether it’s global news, economic shifts, or pop culture trends, a generation is tied to their shared experiences from childhood to adulthood.

Differing from stereotypes, defining individuals based on their generation gives context to why a person may act a certain way or have a particular set of beliefs. Today, there are three different generations that are (or will be) utilizing senior living services and impacting the nature of these communities:

  • The Greatest Generation
  • The Silent Generation
  • Baby Boomers

Your next question may be, “what generation am I?” We can help you answer this question! Silver Comet Village is a senior living community in Powder Springs, Georgia, and we celebrate the individuality of our residents. We believe it is important to cultivate an understanding of the different generations to continue to grow and shape our community around their unique wants and needs.

We want to share the characteristics of each of these key generations and their impact on the senior living industry.

The Greatest Generation

Born between 1901 and 1927

Members of The Greatest Generation grew up during the Great Depression, and many fought or served during World War II. These significant events in our history instilled characteristics in these individuals and molded them into who they are.

Frugal Spending Habits – Due to the Great Depression, members of The Greatest Generation were taught to save everything and practice financial prudence. Every penny counted. Today, in a disposable society, these individuals continue to practice frugal spending habits. As a result, many have avoided the financial stress that is all too common in our current culture.

Work Ethic – At this time in history, working was a means of survival. This meant that you worked for everything you had. Members of The Greatest Generation worked various jobs wherever they were available and for whatever wages were offered. Everyone, including the children of the family, contributed to keep the family afloat during the Great Depression.

Impact on Senior Living

When the first assisted living facility opened in 1981, this generation is primarily who benefitted. They were the first generation to experience a type of senior care beyond traditional nursing homes.

The Silent Generation

Born between 1928 and 1945

Individuals of the Silent Generation, also known as Traditionalists, grew up during the Great Depression and were children during World War II.

Traditional Values – Men in this generation worked while the women stayed home to raise the children. These conventional family values strive to attain moral integrity, safety and security, modesty, and consistency. Loyalty and respect for authority are also key elements of their traditional views and values.

Impact on Senior Living

As generations shift, so has the senior housing industries. Senior care now offers multiple levels of care and assistance to accommodate varying needs, including:

Baby Boomers

Born between 1946 and 1964

The Baby Boomer generation is revolutionizing the senior living and retirement industry. These individuals are more independent and open-minded than the generations before them and expect customization and individuality. Focused on maintaining independence and improving their health and wellness, these individuals are determined to get what they want out of life, from culinary experiences to their preferred hobbies

In the senior living industry, this means adaptation. Baby boomers are looking for senior living options that are customized to their desired lifestyle. Members of this generation are transforming the meaning of “retirement” and are continuing to lead an active lifestyle that allows them to pursue their passions.
