Arthritis is an inflammation of one or more joints, causing stiffness and pain in the joint. If you or the senior in your life is dealing with arthritis, you may be seeking ways to alleviate the symptoms.
Silver Comet Village understands that managing arthritis isn’t always easy, especially if the condition is new. We want to share a few tips to help you or your loved one manage the symptoms and discomfort associated with arthritis. There are several different types of arthritis, and it’s important to speak with a healthcare professional before trying any treatment plan.
Tip #1: Hot and Cold Therapy
A warm shower or bath can be a simple and relaxing way to alleviate arthritis symptoms. Warm water can help ease stiffness in joints. Many experts recommend using a hot tub as a way to apply heat to arthritic joints. Benefits of a soak in a hot tub or spa can include muscle relaxation, decreased pain and joint stiffness, and greater ease when performing physical and daily activities.
As a counter, if the joint is inflamed, swollen, or painful, you can wrap an ice pack around it to help ease the pain and swelling.
Tip #2: Get a Massage
This tip comes straight from the Arthritis Foundation! Massage therapy could be a fantastic way to manage arthritis and reduce pain. According to Tiffany Field, PhD, director of the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine, “regular massage of muscles and joints, whether by a licensed therapist at a spa or by self-massage at home, can lead to a significant reduction in pain for people with arthritis.”
Massage therapy can also help manage arthritis in wrists or hands. A study conducted showed that during four weekly massage sessions, participants showed a significant reduction in pain as well.
Tip #3: Acupuncture Therapy
While acupuncture therapy may not seem notable, reputable organizations, like the World Health Organization (WHO) support this form of therapy. Whether acute or chronic, acupuncture is effective in the treatment of pain. Evidence-Based Acupuncture is one organization leading the scientific charge regarding the benefits and effectiveness of acupuncture.
Tip #4: Exercising and Managing Weight
If you have ever searched “how to manage arthritis,” it is likely you will always find this tip. Stretching and exercising can strengthen your muscles, preserve and increase joint range of motion, decrease stress and strain on joints, and improve sleep quality. Depending on your situation, losing or managing weight can also alleviate the pressure put on joints.
Tip #5: Rest and Relaxation
One of the best ways to manage arthritis pain is to listen to your body’s needs and wants. A regular sleeping pattern can help you avoid the feelings of fatigue that can worsen arthritis pain. If you or your loved one struggle to fall asleep due to arthritis pain, try building a nightly routine. Taking a warm shower, self-massaging the affected joints, avoiding caffeine, and maintaining a quiet, cool, and dark room may help develop better sleeping habits.
While learning how to manage arthritis symptoms can be a process, it is worthwhile to find a routine that improves the quality of life for you or your loved one. Silver Comet Village understands this process can be a challenge at times, and we hope you find these tips helpful. We invite you to explore our blog for more helpful tips!
